BURNETT SECURES SILVER AT YOUTH OLYMPICS
Ryan Burnett will be taking home at least a silver medal from the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore.
The Holy Family Belfast ace guaranteed himself a podium finish with a 2-1 semi-final victory over Uzbek light-flyweight Zohidion Hoorboyev at the International Convention Centre today.
The win sets up Wednesday's 48Kg final with Salman Alizida of Azerbaijan in a repeat of last May's AIBA World Youth final which Alizida won 9-4 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Burnett, 18, earned his winning points with rights to the body and head in the first and third rounds - Hoorboyev equalising with a body shot in the second - and says that Wednesday can't come soon enough.
"I'm thrilled with the win, said Burnett. "It was tough bout and I had to keep my concentration all the way through it. I'm looking forward to the final now and I can't wait to get in the ring for that."
Irish coaches Jim Moore and Jimmy Payne said that they were thrilled with today's performance and looking forward to the mid-week decider with Alizida. "We're delighted with the win, absolutely thrilled, said Moore."Ryan gave a very controlled
"He won 12-0 in his first bout here and now we're all looking forward to the final. It will be another big day for Irish amateur boxing."
Meanwhile, Irish middleweight Joe Ward will not be taking part in Monday's 5th place box-off at the Youth Olympics.
Ward injured his left hand in the first round of Saturday's quarter final defeat (4-2) to Damien Hooper of Australia in a repeat of the World Youth final which Ward won 6-1.
An x-ray on the injury showed that Ward, from the Moate BC in Westmeath, had in fact suffered a broken hand.

BURNETT WINS GOLD AT YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
Ryan Burnett claimed an historic gold medal for Ireland with a magnificent win over Salman Alizida of Azerbaijan in this morning's light-flyweight final at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore.
Burnett, who boxes out of the Holy Family BC in Belfast, beat Alizada 13-6 at the International Convention Centre.
The final was a repeat of the AIBA World Youth final in Baku, Azerbajan earlier this year which Alizida won 9-4.
Aliziada controversially beat Burnett on a count-back in the President's Cup in Azerbaijan last December also.
However, there was no stopping the 18-year old Ulsterman this morning and he ran out a convincing winner, dropping his opponent with a sweet left in a neutral corner in the third en route to victory.
Speaking after the final, Burnett, who had Jim Moore and Jimmy Payne working his corner and who is coached by Gerry Storey at the Holy Family BC, said he was thrilled.
"It's a dream come true for me.I couldn't believe the level of support I got from the Irish fans this morning. They really made themselves heard and it was a great boost as it was tough in there.
"I'm thrilled with the win," added the first ever boxing champion at the Youth Olympics.
The 48Kg clash between Burnett and Alizida was the first boxing final in Singapore this morning.

An Ulster quartet bag four medals at the 2nd European Youth and Junior Womens Championships in France.

Geesala BC flyweight Rowland, a five time Irish champion, was agonisingly edged out on a razor thin 10-9 count-back by Russia's Victoriya Kuleshava following a 4-4 tie in the 51Kg Youth final.

Nicole Meli, Mikela Walsh, Sarah Close and Clare Grace all claimed bronze at the tournament to ensure that Ireland's 10-strong squad secured a very impressive haul of six medals from France.

ULSTER ELITE BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS OLYMPIC DREAM IS GETTING CLOSE – R. As Ulster’s Elite boxers prepare for the weigh-ins on Sunday 23rd the challenge to defend or indeed win that illustrious Ulster title begins at the Donegal Celtic Football club and will end at the renowned home of Ulster boxing – the Ulster Hall on Thursday 3rd February. European Youth and Junior Bronze medallist – Sarah Close will contest her first Elite championship. A member of the Abbey ABC in Bangor, at the early age of 13 years Sarah boxed an exhibition bout in the Ulster Hall but intends to return to the venue for the Ulster finals. The dream is certainly getting closer – and I am delighted that Women’s Boxing has finally got the recognition it deserves. I have gained a great deal of experience over the last few years having competed at two European Youth and Junior championships in Bulgaria and recently in France. I also represented Ulster against Canada in Canada in September last year. Ulster Boxing Council President – Paul Mc Mahon says that the Ulster championship is the platform from which Ulster’s boxer’s progress onto the Nationals and the next few weeks will be very important for our boxers particularly with the Europeans in Dublin in June and then the Worlds which will be a qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The President is confident that following the success of the Northern Ireland boxers in Delhi at the Commonwealth Games, Ulster boxing is in a very healthy position ‘we have a terrific panel of youth and junior boxers in a development programme’. The Council is indebted to the generosity of the Cairn Lodge ABC, St. Agnes ABC, Toome ABC, Clonoe ABC, Ring ABC and the many other clubs around the province who support us with the promotion and development of our young boxers. We are pleased that Sport Northern Ireland is associated with Ulster Boxing and their support is invaluable. Tickets for the Finals £10.00 to £25.00 and are available from: Ulster Hall, Bedford St. Tel: 02890 334455 Belfast Boxing Equipment, Unit 21 Smithfield Market, Belfast Tel: 02890 322766 Fairdeal Mace, Andersonstown Rd. Fryers – A winning experience Photo courtsey of Declan Roughan -Irish News
Immaculataclubman and teenager – James Fryers claimed his first Ulster Elite title witha tremendous display of defence and scoring withgood shots in a close lightweight final with Mark O Hara. Fryers won 4-3 and was also awarded the Most Improved Young Boxer of the championships. In another close encounter at bantamweight, Immaculata’s Ryan Lindberg claimed his sixth ulster title from a cracking final on a score of 9-8. At 22 – Lindberg is a veteran on ulster finals nights, he is one of the most dedicated boxers, but full credit must go to Holy Trinity’s Sean Mc Comb who produced a fantastic display and no doubt will be a serious contender for the future.
St. Paul’s flyweight, Declan Milligan caused an upset by defeating reigning champion Michael Conlon by 6 points to 3.

The welterweight final saw the clash of ‘Champions’, Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Patrick Gallagher set out his stall against defending champion William Mc Laughlin. This was the one the crowd certainly enjoyed with Mc Laughlin’s sharp style and accurate punching proving too much for the gallant Gallagher. Mc Laughlin forced Gallagher to a standing eight count at the start of round 2 and from that there was no doubt that Mc Laughlin’s firepower would secure him his third ulster title with an impressive score of 15-3.
The victory left no doubt in the minds of the Ulster Boxing Council to name Mc Laughlin as the Best Boxer of the Championships.
